Latis (winter) is the first installment of a seasonal portfolio series organized as an homage to the Rubber Stamp Portfolio (1977) produced by Parasol Press and distributed by MoMA. The original portfolio was released in 13 sequential months in editions of 1000. For Latis we decided we would work seasonally, in little clusters of related prints with less rigidity of medium from the outset, but we would keep their 8"x8" format as a guide and shrink the edition size from an unruly 1000 to a more manageable 100 plus APs.
This initial winter offering is comprised of four rubber stamp prints by artists Léonie Guyer, Wayne Smith, Penelope Anstruther, and Laura Figa. The definition of rubber stamp was left up to interpretation, but they all carry the common thread of relief reproduction. The simplicity of the act of stamping, and the implied repetition brought all four of the artists to unexpected corners of their practices. To preserve the poetic center of their studio practice while running it through the most rudimentary of mechanical processes is a proposal fraught with inconvenience and disadvantage but when navigated successfully, that same kernel of poetry is present in a new form and available for a broader dissemination.
